A summary from our new Commodore Quentin Shaw

The results are still only showing as “provisional” but from all accounts the GRR 2017 was as fun and dramatic as ever. As a club we owe biggest thanks once again to ex-commodore Paul King for organising this massively complex event.

Big thanks also to the bosuns and helpers for getting the boats prepared and to Justin, Fu and Nick for 300+ miles of towing back and forth. I understand that Fu’s Bar travelled once again.

We seem to be specialists in winning the Celtic Veterans’ prize: this year to Revi in 2:36, a superb result for a crew with two late substitutions (but who would have guessed that Kelda was a vet?). Ginger placed second Celtic vets in 2:38 despite injury, another remarkable achievement. But ahead of them both Red stormed in as 3rd placed Celtic overall, and 19th fasted boat out of 330 on handicap, in 2:34.

If only Dave the German had been a year older than 39, we would have placed 1-2-3 Celtic Veterans (the hat of fairness might give us that next year).

And finally the Pembrokes: in the absence of Concrete, my all-time favourite GRR boat, Yellow came second in 2:47. Damn you, Ynys Mon, the competition will be revisited.

Congratulations to all of you, and one last very big thank you to Paul.
