SARC Scottish Loch Challenge

SARC Scottish Loch Challenge 26th 27th 28th September 2025

In AD 870 the Viking Kings of Dublin, Ivar and Olaf, laid siege to Dunbarton Rock at the mouth of the River Clyde. They sacked the stronghold and travelled inland via Loch Long. The narrow barrier between Loch Long and Loch Lomond is a small isthmus, here the Vikings carried boats across from Arrochar to Tarbet into Loch Lomond. From here they sailed south to plunder the Lochs settlements.

In 1263, followers of the Norwegian King Haco, also travelled across the isthmus to Loch Lomond, and sailed south to plunder again.

It is proposed we follow the routes of the Viking ancestors and recreate the journey for a third time.

The Plan

The proposal is to travel up Friday back on Sunday evening. Row a Loch each day Saturday and Sunday. Two “fantastic” days rowing. Overnight accommodation still to be determined but likely to be an Air B&B cottage at the North of Loch Lomond near Arrochar or Tarbet. Loch Long and Loch Lomond are similar in length and will be around 16 – 18 miles of spectacular rowing each day. Loch Long will be tide assisted!

Require 2 boats (Necessary because a “safety boat is required by Loch Lomond Park Authority) We will need a team of at least 10 people minimum, but a support driver would also be useful. On Saturday morning we will launch from Arrochar at the North of Loch Long and finish at Cove Sailing Club on Saturday afternoon. It coincides with the Cove annual beer festival.

On Sunday we will row south down Loch Lomond finishing at Loch Lomond Rowing Club.
Captain of the Loch Lomond rowing club (Jim Paton) has previously offered his support and local knowledge and the use of the club boat ramp and facilities.

In 2022 we were also supported by James Mclean of Cove Sailing Club who allowed loading of the boats and the use of their facilities on Loch Long.

Distance Shrewsbury to Arrochar 325 miles drive time 6 hours approximately.

There is good road access most of the way along the proposed route to provide for crew swops and refreshment stops. This is an “adventure row” it will be challenging but has the most amazing scenery and wildlife viewing opportunities. Our 2022 trip was blessed with great weather and the late September date will ensure no midges and stunning autumn colours.
